Rolling
Cost: ~$350
Shock & Awe was built to compete in line following, maze solving, and open nagivation type contests. It won 1st place in the RSSC grid competitions contest.
It moved through the maze at 18"/sec and with the camera looking ahead performed arc turns at full speed.
It uses NEMA 23 stepper motors and is capable of accurately moving around and turning at over several feet per second. I've spend a long time working with steppers and it's finally paying off with a smooth, fast, accurate drive system.
Components:
- Processor: BasicX (very good chip)
- Motors: NEMA 23 steppers
- Motor Controller: serial board (I have rebuilt this to be a parrallel controller that gives much better control)
- Video: Spectronix frame grabber (out of business)
- Chassis: Clear PVC with a blue tint

Congrats on your win! I'm very impressed with your stepper motor performance. Operating at that speed is amazing. I'd love to see a video of your robot in action.
