Sharp GP2D12 IR Distance Sensor

This sensor uses IR light and triangulation to detect objects 4" to 30" (10cm-80cm) away. It has a "non-linear" output - meaning objects that are 1" and ~20" may have the same output. So, most people recess the sensor, so that objects never come closer than 4".

These sensors are very reliable and are often used as an inexpensive way of detecting objects before a collision.
